Samba
2008 Half Andalusian filly (registered IAHLA)
By Altanero D (Andalusian) out of Baja
(ABRA-registered Quarter Horse mare)
$5,000
Samba was foaled on June 16, 2008. Samba was born
with perfectly formed legs and a charming buckskin
color, complete with primitive dun-factor markings
including zebra stripes on her legs, black-rimmed ears, a
dorsal stripe, and dark shading on her shoulders and
face. She has no white markings, except a small snip.
But before the summer was over, she began to turn
gray, like her fabulous sire, Altanero D (below). Then
the days became shorter and the snow began to fall, and
Samba grew a shaggy winter coat like a yak -- a
buckskin coat. Over the winter, she looked more like a
wild Prezwalski's Horse from the Asian steppes than the
classical baroque descendant she is! We're beginning to
see her real color, which will eventually be true grey.
She currently still has a little tawny hair mixed with the
blue-grey, giving her an unusual pearly buckskin
coloration.
The overall impression of Samba's conformation is one
of balance, harmony and proportion. She has the
muscular hindquarters of her Quarter Horse dam. With
these powerful hindquarters and her compact frame, she
should be capable of a high degree of collection. She
has an expressive, elegant head and neck.
Her conformation clearly shows the influence of her
Andalusian sire. She has small ears, a rectangular yet
refined head, a short back and a rounded croup with a
low-set, tucked-in tail. Her legs are simply perfect, with
the dainty, yet strong, sound feet typical of Iberian
horses. She has already begun to grow a luxurious
amount of mane and tail hair.
Samba has lovely eyes -- up close, it appears she's
wearing heavy eyeliner, like an Egyptian pharaoh! She
has a remarkably sweet, trusting and compliant nature,
and it is reflected in her kind eyes.
This summer, Samba is 2 years old, and stands 15.1H.
Her dam is 14.2H, and her sire is 15.3H. We expect her
to finish around 15.2-15.3H; she will be a lady's horse.
Samba accepts haltering and handling all over her body.
She picks up her feet for the farrier, and yields to
pressure when asked to move her hindquarters,
forequarters, or both at once. She accepts tying, but
we've never left her tied without supervision. She's
handled daily with kindness and consideration, and she
has developed a curious, friendly attitude toward human
beings. When she meets someone new, she asks to be
scratched on her chest and throat. She has learned that
the approach of humans means pleasant things -- treats,
grooming and interesting games.
We foresee a future in English and Western Pleasure, as
well as dressage and versatility classes, for this elegant
little filly.

Altanero D is a 21-year-old Cria Caballar-approved
National Champion Pura Raza Espaniola (PRE) stallion.
This Grand Prix stallion demonstrates his versatility and
athleticism by excelling in the show ring in western,
English, and Alta Escuela (High School) dressage. He
passes along his kind temperament and tons of hair to all
his offspring.
With his dreamy looks, it's not hard to imagine him as a
guest performer at horse shows and exhibitions,
demonstrating haute ecole dressage movements, and in
fact, he performs at venues all over the United States at
an age when many show horses have retired. This bodes
well for the soundness and longevity of his offspring.
Altanero D is also a "cover boy" -- his image has been
used extensively in calendars, greeting cards and other
publications.
